About the Institute

Founded in 2003, the Prometheus Institute is a non-partisan US-based non-profit delivering insight and action dedicated to achieve simultaneous and universal economic, industrial, environmental, and societal improvement.

Our Vision

Our goal is to accelerate the deployment of socially-beneficial sustainable resource technologies – including those of energy, water, food, and materials – by improving the choices of relevant industry participants, change agents, and policymakers. We achieve our mission by collecting and disseminating reliable data, quantitative analysis, and practical information about these industries, as well as synthesizing this knowledge into cutting edge insight and actions.

Today, the Institute strives to be the world’s leading source of data and insight on the entire cleantech sector, supply chain, financial mechanisms, and end-markets through a series of data collection and dissemination projects and the publication of books, research reports, lectures, and tailored strategic input for key decision makers.  It also catalyzes the use of these by partnering with or forming other organizations to deploy useful solutions, as required.

Our History

Founded in 2003 by Travis Bradford, a former private equity and hedge fund executive, the Institute was created to fill a need for reliable data, quantitative analysis and practical information about the renewable energy industry. This lack of information is a limitation to the growth of the field and inhibits economic support for sustainability, and the Institute was created to provide this vital information and thereby accelerate the transition to widespread use of these sustainable technologies. Since its founding, the Institute has delivered the following results:

  • Books – published Solar Revolution and finishing upcoming books on Global Transportation and Water
  • Electric Sector Research – developed the world’s best series of Solar market research (published through GTM Research), reports on Ocean Energy, etc
  • Transportation Sector Research – wrote timely market research on biofuels and electric vehicles
  • Strategic Advisory – provided start-ups, venture funds, bankers, policy makers, NGOs, IGOs, and the press with vital sector insights
  • Launched Greentech Media – spinning out the research group of the Institute in 2008 formed the core of this
leading cleantech media and market research firm
  • Established the Carbon War Room – in partnership with Richard Branson and Virgin Unite, we launched this “do tank” to harness entrepreneurship and markets for climate change impact
  • NGO Fiscal Sponsor – for multiple organizations, including the Global Observatory
